As a teenager, I spent countless hours chopping up fashion magazines from my older siblings, creating collage cards for my pen pals. I had several gallon-sized Ziploc bags filled with categorized magazine clippings, eagerly awaiting my next collage session. My dad's work as a pastor meant we traveled often, each trip bringing new pen pals into my life. Oh, the thrill of checking the mailbox –– Will there be a piece of mail for me?!
I have MANY shoe boxes of saved snail mail from over the years.
This is where my love for greeting cards truly began. As the digital age advances, I find myself missing those handwritten notes, adorned with cute postage stamps and the unique penmanship of my friends. There’s something special about slowing down to think carefully about what you want to say—no edits, just writing from the heart.
I haven’t changed too much, only now my current favorite medium is watercolor paint. I love a brush in my hand, a messy palette of colors and the way the paint playfully moves across the paper. However, this week I returned to my roots and did some collaging. I’m filled with nostalgia.
Shall we take a moment to step away from our screens and pen a friend?
I guarantee it will make their whole day.
